Orcas Island has been known as "The Gem of the San Juans" for generations. Reasons include its forested slopes, moss-covered rocky knolls, serene valleys and rugged shoreline liberally sprinkled with Madrona and fir. Above all, perhaps, are the enchanting vistas of mountains and island-dotted waters that recede to the horizon in all directions. Seattle shipbuilder and mayor Robert Moran came here on doctor's advice in the early 1900s, a prescription that resulted in his outliving all his brothers, building the mansion that became the centerpiece of Rosario Resort, and giving to the State of Washington most of the land that is now Moran State Park, a superb jewel (and training center) of the state's park system.

This accepting, friendly community has wonderful facilities for its size, now something over 4,500 year-round residents. Kayakers, sailors and power boat operators find the surrounding waters ideal for day trips and longer explorations. Those interested in maintaining health through exercise can explore the park's trails, cycle the rolling roads, "pump iron" at the local health club or relax in the pools and spas there and at Rosario Resort. The culturally interested will find active theatre, concert and exhibit programs at the Orcas Theatre and Community Center, "The Living Room" and other venues scattered around the island. An annual Chamber Music Festival centered on Labor Day Weekend attracts world-class instrumentalists for a series of concerts. Extensive facilities for children and teens are balanced by the new Senior Center and housing geared to the needs of senior citizens. The village of Eastsound has many shops, a large supermarket as well as smaller stores specializing in organic foods, fine wines and gourmet foods -- and superb bookstores and public library. Churches, service clubs and volunteer activities of all sorts round out the opportunities for community involvement.

The central location of Orcas Island off the mainland corridor between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. gives residents ready access to other charming places on both sides of the border, such as Bellingham on the mainland and Victoria on Vancouver Island. Majestic Mt. Baker (see picture), the Cascades and Olympic mountains are visibly present and beckon hikers with challenging trails.

If you don't already know Orcas and the San Juan Islands, this is an ideal vacation destination -- and a great place to spend the rest of your life! Please contact me with any questions you may have about this fine community or properties on Orcas and in the San Juans.
